Supporting Adult Learners transition to Higher Education via a Maths Support Centre

Anthony Cronin

University College Dublin, Ireland

The Maths Support Centre (MSC) at University College Dublin offers a suite of supports for Adult learners (on the Access to Science, Engineering and Agriculture programme) to ease their transition from working life to University learning. In particular, the MSC offers a week of pre-semester refresher sessions. These sessions cover the very basics of numeracy, arithmetic and algebra. At these sessions the students are also introduced to an online adaptive learning software programme which they can use throughout their first year at university for self-assessment and practice. The focus of the sessions is to build confidence and fluency. Once the semester begins the MSC offers two dedicated 90-minute workshops sessions per week. In this talk I will discuss the reflections of these students on how the MSC assists them to make the transition to university life and develop a sense of belonging within that community.
